Dr. Vroom graduated at Rutgers College in 1827; was a physician and surgeon. Several years afterward he abandoned the practice of medicine, and, in 1842, moved to Jersey City. He immediately took a deep interest in the welfare of the community, and was elected alderman. He was prominent in the organization of the Board of Education of Jersey City in 1851. In 1857, he was elected city treasurer, which office he held until his death. He managed with peculiar skill the various and intricate questions of finance which arose, especially during the Civil War. He always took a commanding position in the government of the First Dutch Reformed Church, of which he was an elder when he died. Dr. Vroom was descended from Cornelis Peterson Vroom, who came from Holland in the early part of the 17th century, and settled on Long Island or New Amsterdam. His great-great-grandson, Peter Dumont Vroom, who was b. Jan. 27, 1745, m., June 1, 1775, Elsie Bogart, and their son, Guysbert Bogart Vroom, was the brother of Governor Peter D. Vroom, and the father of Dr. Peter D.L. Vroom.

Children: (1) Guysbert Bogart Vroom, born at Washingtonville, Aug. 17, 1868; died at Los Angeles, California, Feb. 24, 1890; unmarried. (2) Doctor John Nicholl Vroom, Physician, of Denver, Colorado,, born Mar. 24, 1865; living; unmarried.
2. Alfred Hine Vroom, of Wyoming, Minnesota born Aug. 19, 1835; died at Wyoming, Oct. 29, 1872. He served in the Civil War as 1st Lieutenant, Co. A, 21st NJ Volunteers.
3. Guysbert Bogart Vroom, of Jersey City, born at Raritan, N.J., Aug. 27, 1837; died at Jersey City, Mar. 12, 1864; married Dec. 23, 1862, Kate Brown Riddle Vroom, of Jersey City. Children Elizabeth Riddle Vroom, who married Rev. W.W. Jordan of Clinton, Massachusetts.
4. George Augustus Vroom, of Hackensack, N.J., produce commission merchant (firm George A. Vroom & Co., 128 Eighth Ave., N.Y. City), born in N.Y. City, July 14, 1840; living; married Dec. 10, 1885, at Jersey City, Mary Flanagan (daughter of John J. Flanagan and Elizabeth Shupp), who was born Jan. 31, 1854, and d. Nov. 22, 1906. Children: Helen Cameron Vroom, born Mar. 12, 1890.
5. Pierre De Lamater Vroom, of Jersey City NJ, born Feb. 1, 1844; died Sept. 4, 1863.
6. David Gould Vroom, of Hackensack, N.J., born at Jersey City, June 8, 1847; married Apr. 25, 1894, Pauline Fischer (daughter of Gustavus Fischer, of New Brunswick, N.J.). No children.

This is a stunning portrait of 2 Vroom family brothers. It is clearly dated, with full names and surnames, has a beautiful decorative backmark in excellent condition. We wish all of our ancestors could be this clearly identified with exact dates and ages. The photograph is one of two stunning looking Vroom boys, taken by a skilled photographer. This active family with early Holland or Dutch roots, seems to have moved often, and lived in many states. It was found in Catskill, Greene County, New York.
