Young Bertha wears a beautiful striped dress, and appears to be 16-18 years old. This photo was found in Hampshire County Massachusetts. She may have some New England ties. Her father is also known as Granville Cattrell, Granville Cottrill, or Granville Cottrille in census records, born in 1822.
This is a wonderfully signed photograph of a beautiful young girl with African American roots. We wish she could talk, would love to hear her story. A rare piece. We constantly search for signed 19th c. African American material, which is hard to come by. It is assumed this family has southern American Slavery and Civil War roots.
