1881 Ann Ladd Chase & Thomas Meady Chase, Newbury MA Antique Sampler

Written on item: "Mrs. A.L. Chase, Ag. 80, West Newbury, Aug. 4th, 1881" is beautifully handwritten in old dip pen ink on an early piece of linen fabric, hand-stitched to a card which has been lovingly covered in old clear cello. It is not adhered, and the old cello covering is a bit brittle, but could be easily removed.

Note on reverse: "Born 1801, Ann Ladd Chase, widow of Thomas who was uncle of Thomas Meady Chase" is handwritten in old pencil. This may have been a mourning piece after her death, or pinned to her at her funeral. It also could have been intended for an old quilt square that was never finished. It was found in Newburyport, Essex County, Massachusetts.

Found in Public Genealogy Records:
US Census Records: Ann lived with the Stackpole family in later years, and is listed as their Mother in Law. We believe she died around 1880, as she disappears off census records after that year.

Thomas Meady Chase (Thomas M. Chase, Thomas Chase)
Occupation: Comb Maker & Manufacturer, born 8 Oct 1820 in Newbury, Massachusetts.
His Parents were John Chase, born 1783 in Newbury, MA. and Betsey Carleton Chase, born in 1785, also in Newbury, Massachusetts. Thomas was one of 7 children born between 1804-1825 in Newbury, MA.
His Siblings:
Betsey Chase
Sarah Dole Chase
Caroline Houghton Chase
Harrison Gray Otis Chase (Harrison Chase)
Elvira Melvina Chase
Thomas Meady Chase
Rowena Roxana Chase (Rowena Chase)

1860 US Census of West Newbury, Mass:
Thomas M. Chase, age 38, Comb Maker, born MA
Mary T. Chase, age 34, born New Hampshire
Edward N. Chase, age 13, born Massachusetts
Emma G. Chase, age 8, born Massachusetts

They lived next door to the Carlton / Carleton family, thus the family connection. This is a beautiful little personal lost family piece of a well known Newbury area family. Rare, and one of a kind.

Size: 3.5 by 2.75 inches
