Photo type: CDV Carte de Visite Photograph, Victorian. Photographer: Freeman & Rowley 304 East State Street, Rockford, Winnebago County, Illinois. (known to be Horace H. He later worked in Buffalo, Erie County, New York. His brother was photographer Morris V. Rowley 1862-1929)
Some good genealogy work needs to be done on this late 1870's to early 1880's photo to find baby Harry T. Ross, born about 1880 in the Rockford or Winnebago County, Illinois area. He has an "Auntie Alice", which is a great clue.
He is a stunning and much loved baby boy, in beautiful clothing and high top button shoes. In the Victorian era, boys wore frocks with pleated skirts, or tunics and blouses over pleated skirts, until the age of three or five. Often you will also see a tartan sash. A portrait of the Prince of Wales in a Scottish kilt in 1849 gave rise to this vogue for boys.
This photo was found in Brimfield, Hampden County, Massachusetts, thus he may also have New England roots. Any help or correction on this ROSS family appreciated, email Debra here.
