Publication Year: 1863
Publication Place: Illinois
School Name: Northwestern University
Residence Place: Naperville

At age 16, at end of the war, he enlisted in Company D, Illinois 156th Infantry Regiment on 09 Mar 1865 and was mustered out as a Corporal on 20 Sep 1865 at Memphis, Tennessee TN, which seems quite a feat for a young boy of that age.

In 1872, Charles lived in Napierville and was in partnership with Henry Whipple in the Chicago City Directory.

His family roots are in the upstate area of central NY and he moved to Cazenovia where he is listed as a "teacher of elocution" at Cazenovia for about 3 years in the 1870's. He had 2 children born there before moving on to Rochester NY, where he is also listed as an elocution teacher.

His wife was Delia Etherlinda Hough Thatcher 1848–1903 (also seen as Adelia) born to Dr. Erastus George Hough 1824–1849 and Caroline Matilda Sedgwick Hough Daniels 1829–1907 of Illinois. They married in 1869.  Note: Her mother remarried Hamilton Cyrus Daniels 1820-1897 after her husband Erastus (and Delia's father) died young, at age 25. Delia had 2 half siblings: Walter Franklin Daniels 1856–1921 and Carrie Ione Daniels Cooper 1865–1895.

Charles & Delia's 3 children were Ralph Hough Thatcher born 1870 in Illinois and Warren Whipple Thatcher 1875–1947 and Grace Delia Thatcher born 1877. The last two children were born in Cazenovia. Charles is buried in Rochester NY and Delia, who died 14 years before him, is buried in their birthplace of Napierville, Illinois, DuPage County and Will County. This is a suburb of metropolitan Chicago.

What is a teacher of elocution? Teaching the skill of clear and expressive speech, distinct pronunciation and articulation.

This photo was found in Oneida County NY, and is a CDV photo of a side view photo of young Professor Thatcher, a Caz College Victorian era professor in a large moustache, all the Victorian rage. He appears about 30 years of age here. A beautiful portrait.
