Note: Boston, Maasachusetts is Barnstable, Berkshire, Middlesex, Norfolk, Suffolk, and Worcester County. This is a large card with litho butterfly and rose scene. These Grocers were very prominent in New England and considered a very influential grocery firm. Yerkes is also one alternative spelling for the Yerxa surname. Found in Northampton, Massachusetts, in Hampshire County MA. Notes from a Yerxa related family member: YERXA / MILES – I was pleased to find an Advertising Trade Card for Cobb, Bates & Yerxa Grocers, MA posted on Ancestorville. My grandfather, Frank Edgar Miles, who was born in 1877, in Stanley, York, New Brunswick, Canada came to the US at the age of 17. He went to work for Cobb, Bates & Yerxa in Boston, MA. Henry Detrick Yerxa was the founder of that great grocery firm. Henry D. Yerxa and my grandfather were 1st cousins 2 times removed. This is where my grandfather first learned the grocery business. In about 1902 he moved to Fargo, ND (Cass County) where he worked at the Yerxa Mercantile Store. John Pritchard Yerxa was the proprietor of the retail grocery store. John P. Yerxa was my grandfather’s uncle. Later my grandfather moved to Goldfield, NV where he worked as a clerk in a grocery store (H. W. Miles & Co.). This Henry W. Miles was not a relative. Frank then moved to Orange Co., CA where he owned and operated a grocery store chain. I have a picture of his delivery truck which says “Miles, The Cash Grocer” on the side. It would be interesting to know if there are others who have information on these Miles and Yerxa family members. Note: Please contact us directly to connect you to this Yerxa family member. 2695 Irving, Sanders: c. 1870's Stereoview Photograph of the Gravesite of Washington Irving The famous writer of "Sleepy Hollow", Washington Irving is buried in the Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, Old Dutch Church in Sleepy Hollow, N.Y. His parents were merchant Deacon William Irving and Sarah Sanders Irving (Sarah Irving). Named after President George Washington, he met him as a boy. He was the first American to make a living exclusively from writing. His most famous work, published in 1819 was short stories, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and Rip Van Winkle. Sleepy Hollow is actually in the lower Hudson Valley area near Tarrytown, N.Y. Rip Van Winkle sleeps through the complete Revolutionary War in the Catskill mountains of Upstate New York. Tarrytown, New York is in Westchester and Albany County. Names visible on stones in the photo: Washington Irving, Born April 3, 1783, Died Nov. 28 1859. (Mr. Irving never married, a young woman to whom he was engaged died at age 17 and he mourned her the rest of his life) Surrounding stones that are readable are his mother, Sarah Sanders, wife of William Irving, and his brother Ebenezer Irving. There is also a grave marked Elizabeth (most likely Elizabeth Irving), and we believe it says "wife of Ebeneezer". The current gravestone of Washington Irving is a later version of the one in this photograph, making us think the first might have been replaced somewhere soon after this photo was taken. In 1832 Irving returned from European travels to New York, and set up his new home "Sunnyside" in Tarrytown. For the next 25 years he shared Sunnyside with his brother Ebenezer and Ebenezer's five daughters. Washington Irving also held diplomatic posts in Great Britain and Spain, often traveling.
