416 Cheney: 1905 Handwritten Genealogy Document by Ancil Cole Cheney, VT, NY Name written on document: A. Cole Cheney written in old dip pen ink. Dated: August 1, 1905 from Rochester, New York, Monroe County Born: June 29, 1826. Town: Franklin. State: Vermont. County: Franklin County. This is a page from a diary, we believe. Handwritten it says: "My name is A. Cole Cheney. I was born in the town of Franklin, Franklin County in the state of Vermont, VT. June 29th 1826. The family consisted of 8 children. Zeri, Albert, Almon, Israel, Addie, Caroline, and Adeline. (Note: There appears to be both an Addie and an Adeline in his Cheney family.) He goes on to tell the Cole family history and how he was named Ancil, after a lion tamer who came through town. There is an extra note included which states that in the 1860's there was an A. Cole Cheney as manager of Western Union telegraph office, 11 Reynolds Arcade, in Rochester, NY in 1915 at 78 years old. We found him in 1880 NY census records with his wife Frances Cheney, or Fanny Cheney. They had two children, Mary L. Cheney (Mary Cheney) amd George H. Cheney (George Cheney). The later in the 1900 census records, Fanny and Ancil, now listed as Ansel C. Cheney (Ansel Cheney) are older and living with presumed family members named
Carrie C. Fowler (Carrie Fowler), Elwood C. Fowler (Elwood Fowler), and their daughter named Marjorie Fowler aged 14. County: Rochester is Monroe County. Found in Upstate New York, in nearby Genesee County NY. Note: Census records might read: Zeri Cheney, Albert Cheney, Almon Cheney, Israel Cheney, Caroline Cheney and Adeline Cheney. Zeri may be a nickname for Zared Cheney, Zero Cheney, Zerah Cheney, Zerahiah Cheney, Zeredah Cheney, Zeresh Cheney, Zereth Cheney, or Zer Cheney. The original certificate is written in old period dip pen ink. Photo Type: Paper. Date of Birth: May 11, 1908. Date of Baptism: June 7, 1908. It appears that a newer certificate (2 copies) was acquired on June 18, 1966 and signed by Msgr. J.P. McDonald. The photo is perhaps Pauline at her First Holy Communion for it depicts an angelic young girl frocked in white, including her veil with a wreath of flowers. 439 Howland, Sherman: 1878 Memorial Mourning Booklet for Benjamin Baker Howland, RI This early paper booklet measures 6 x 9 inches and has 26 pages. It was printed by John F. Sanborn in Newport, Rhode island, which is in Newport County in 1878 (John Sanborn). The upper portion has an early handwritten signature of Kate A. Wadsworth, presumably the owner of the booklet and a Newport area church member who attended the service. (Kate Wadsworth may be a Victorian era nickname for Katherine Wadsworth, Katharine Wadsworth, Catherine Wadsworth, Catharine Wadsworth, Kathleen Wadsworth, or Cathleen Wadsworth.) The booklet celebrates the life of Benjamin Baker Howland of Newport, a well known historian, painter, and leader of the early First Baptist Church in that town. Benjamin Howland or Benjamin B. Howland died 10 weeks before this eulogy. Addresses were given by Reverend C.E. Barrows (most of the book is his address, 20 pages) and the rest by Reverend T. Thayer, D.D. (Doctor of Divinity) (5 pages). BB Howland was born to Henry Howland & Susan Baker Howland (Susan Howland) as an only child on Dec. 11, 1787. An ancestor of his was John Barker, an elder in the Newport Church 1660's, and prominent in the pilgrim colony. BB Howland was taught by John Frazer of Scotland & Robert Rogers. A classmate was Richard H. Dana (Richard Dana) of Boston. He studied painting under Robert Fekes. He painted a portrait of Charles Gyles, the town clerk of Newport, Michael Eddy: pastor of the church for 50 years, and he also made an unfinished copy of a painting by Smibert of John Callendar, the earliest historian of Rhode Island and another pastor of the church. He gave temperence lectures, was active in the Newport Historical Society, and fought in the War of 1812. He took no pension from that war, as he felt it was his duty. There is a mention of a scotchman named Dr. Guthrie, aged like him. He married Phebe C. (Greene) Howland, (Phebe Greene or Phebe Howland, or may be written as Phoebe Greene or Phoebe Howland in census records) and they had a daughter, Susan Baker Howland, who was born May 7, 1818. She married Mr. Robert Sherman on July 1, 1839, at Newport. Mr. and Mrs. Sherman were the parents of the following children: 1. Mary Clarke Gardner, born Aug. 1, 1844, died June 30, 1913. (Mary Sherman) 2. Jane Howland, born April 24, 1847, died Nov. 12, 1893. (Jane Sherman) 3. Benjamin Baker Howland, born Sept. 16, 1850, died Sept. 15, 1905. (Benjamin Sherman) 4. Elizabeth Greene Howland, born June 14, 1852; (Elizabeth Sherman). Miss Sherman resided at No. 113 Turo street, Newport. Robert Sherman died at his home in Newport on April 25, 1881. Names in Census records might read: Susan B. Howland, Susan Howland, Susan Howland Sherman, Susan Sherman, Mary C. Sherman, Mary Gardner, Mary C. Gardner, Jane Howland Sherman, Jane H. Sherman, Benjamin B. Sherman, Elizabeth G. Sherman. This piece was found in Madison County, NY New York. This is a wonderful and early identified Howland family history, Howland genealogy, Sherman family history, Sherman genealogy, Baker family history, Baker genealogy piece from a well known and much celebrated Howland family member. 444 Axtel: 1850's Hand Sewn Quilt Square of Emma Axtel, ME This is a beautiful old hand signed quilt square, handmade of early fabrics. 18 different squares were found in Portland Maine, Cumberland County all with different women's family names handwritten on them. They are all on our ancestor site. This one has the signature Emma Axtel handwritten in center, in old early dip pen handwriting from the period. Most likely there was a quilting bee and each member made their own squares. Some of the family members are related by same surnames, others may also be related family members also. For whatever reason, the handmade quilt was never finished. This square is hand sewn with the utmost care. Found in Portland, Maine area, which is in Cumberland County. They came directly out of a house in Portland. Photo Type: Dry Mount. Approximate Age: circa 1890's-1900. Found in Upstate New York, near Rochester NY in area of Livingston, Ontario and Monroe County. Emma may be a nickname for Emily Hall, Emmagene Hall, Emaline Hall, Emiline Hall, Emmy Hall, Emmy Lou Hall, Emeline Hall, Emelina Hall, Emelyne Hall, Emmaline Hall, Ema Hall or other names. Harrison looks to be the eldest in the photo, and sits in a rocking chair. He wears a dark wool jacket and his left hand is missing, appears as though his left arm is missing from the elbow down. He is the age of a Civil War veteran, and we wonder if he lost this in battle? Might he be found in GAR records, Civil War records? The other two women could be his sisters, one a daughter, one a sister, or other family members. The elder of the two may be his wife, although neither are named Chandler. Please look carefully at the scan of handwriting on one of the women, Myria, as it is illegible to us. Myria is a 19th c. first name in census records. Any help appreciated. We were able to find a Harrison Chandler in census records in Steuben County, NY closest to where this photo was found, but this photo could have been taken in any state of the Union.
