The name Forest Champlin is printed in fancy black script, as well as the nickname "Claudie" written in pencil, in large script on the back. Found in a large lot of 19th c. calling cards in the vicinity of Augusta, Maine which is in Kennebec County. It appears to have been removed from a scrapbook, as many of the others were in this Kennebec County collection. 779 Wheeler: 1850's Hand Sewn Quilt Square of Mrs. Lyman Wheeler, ME This is a beautiful old hand signed quilt square, handmade of early fabrics. 18 different squares were found in Portland Maine, Cumberland County all with different women's family names handwritten on them. They are all on our ancestor site. This one has the signature Mrs. Lyman Wheeler handwritten in center, in old early dip pen handwriting from the period. Most likely there was a quilting bee and each member made their own squares. Some of the family members are related by same surnames, others may also be related family members also. For whatever reason, the handmade quilt was never finished. This square is hand sewn with the utmost care. Found in Portland, Maine area, which is in Cumberland County. Ancestral migration made the mailing and movement of ephemera common between separated family members, although we do strongly feel these quilt squares to be Portland, Maine related, as they came directly out of a house in that vicinity. 789 Osterhoudt: c. 1900 Photograph of a Group of Men in a Logging Camp, Long Eddy, NY Written on photo: "Walter Osterhoudt, Long Eddy, New York, Jan. 22, 1900" handwritten in old dip pen ink. The year is sightly obstructed by a repair that was made to the photo some time ago. A fabric tape is attached to the back where there was an apparent break, and a strip of age yellowed cellophane tape is across the front. This is an interesting winter scene photograph of 11 workmen lined up in front of a low wooden building with a smoking stack. Long Eddy, New York is in Sullivan County. Photo Type: Albumen Photograph. Approximate Age: circa 1900. A family member lovingly taped this photo back together with what appears to be early medical gauze tape. It has a center hole, as maybe it was hung in the building in the photo. A nice early occupational photograph with an Osterhoudt identified family member. 798 Ferguson, Strong, Eckert: 1839 Certificate of Citizenship of Henry Ferguson of Scotland, NY Written on document: "Orleans County, Clerk's Office ss. I Certify that Henry Ferguson of Orleans County, has complied with all the requisitions of the Laws of Congress, in relation to the naturalization of Aliens, and is entitled to all the privileges and immunities of a Naturalized Citizen of the United States of America. In Testimony Whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and impressed the official Seal of said County, this Ninth day of May, A.D. 1839. signed T.C. Strong, Clerk." This is a folded two page document. Names and date are written in early original dip pen ink. The certificate bears a wonderful early embossed seal from Orleans County Common Pleas. Orleans County, New York State with an Erie Canal packet boat image printed on it. We found an Orleans County cemetery record of a Henry Ferguson from Scotland, who married Margaret Eckert during this exact time frame. Both are buried at Boxwood Cemetery, Orleans County. This is a rare family genealogy piece and collectible piece on its own, but exceedingly wonderful for Ferguson family research! There is much other exciting info on web on Henry and Margaret Ferguson from Orleans County. He was a shoemaker. His wife Margaret Eckert was born in 1806 in Dutchess Co., NY, and they were married 9 Aug 1847, in Ridgeway NY. Henry was her 2nd husband.
