(She may be Florence Luce or Florence De Veida Luce or Florence D. Luce in census records.) County: Richfield Springs is in Otsego county. This is a wonderful old business card of a teacher of Victorian era manners, elocution and delsarte, which was a system created integrating speech, movement, gesture, and calisthenics patterned on the theories of Francois Delsarte (1811-71), a French teacher of dramatic and musical expression. 1758 Luther, Wyckoff, Burns, Hope, Emory: 1860`s Beautiful CDV Carte de Visite Photograph of Lidia Luther or Lydia Luther, OH This is a great old CDV photo of a woman identified as Lidia Luther on the back in pencil. (misspelled, as her name was Lydia Luther of Ashland, Ohio) It was taken at the E.M. Ensminger Studio in Ashland, Ohio, Ashland County during the Civil War era. A search of online databases indicates that she was born Lydia Emory Wyckoff on December 29, 1815 in Clinton, New Jersey (Passaic, Hunterdon and Essex County) and married a banker named Hulburt Luther. They were living in Ashland, Ohio by the time of the 1850 census and had 4 children, Helen Luther, Joel H. Luther (Joel Luther), Charles Luther, and Emily L. Luther (Emily Luther). She was the daughter of Elias Wyckoff and Mary Hope Wyckoff (Mary Wyckoff or Mary H. Wyckoff) In the 1880`s she lived with her daughter Emily Burns who married Andrew J. Burns, (Andrew Burns) and had a grandson named Charles Burns. She died in Ashland on January 19, 1901. The image is very crisp and clear, with her in a stunning classic Americasn Victorian era outfit with black lace gloves. Found in Florence, South Carolina in Florence County. The proprietors of that business are Burbank & Ankarloo. The name "Roxa Mary" is also handwritten in old period pencil on the back. Manchester, New Hampshire is in & Hillsborough, Merrimack and Rockingham County. They advertise "Cards, Bill heads, Letter heads, Circulars, label and Job Work of every description printed to order at bottom prices, Satisfaction guaranteed." the card has a mermaid, seashell, ocean and sailboat scene, beautiful early litho. Card is printed on heavy old off white cardstock with simple early American typography font. These business cards give a wonderful look into early advertising at the turn of the last century, as well as good genealogy clues. Early Census and business records can also be of help in finding these lost ancestors and their working whereabouts, as well as the gen sites for each specific county. This small reward of merit or friendship card was found in Manchester, New Hampshire in Hillsborough, Merrimack and Rockingham Counties. It has the verse: "Forget me not! What varied feeling These little magic words impart; Absence and love at once revealing, They sadden while they soothe the heart. Forget me Not! 1772 Curtis: 1895 Opening Invitation to Millinery Emporium, VT This beautiful litho printed invitation card is in 2 pieces, was originally a folded card. It is split cleanly on the fold. It has a Victorian litho image on the front of a girl in a bonnet, swans, and the Curtis family name: Compliments of Mrs. C.H. Curtis, Bradford, VT. The inside reveals an opening for a Curtis family women run Millinery store with imported patterned hats and bonnets. The opening date is handwritten in old dip pen ink, and is Oct. 16 & 17, 1895. 1773 Hutchingson, French: c. 1870-80's Reward of Merit Card to Ina Hutchingson from Ella N. French Names written on card: Presented to Ina Hutchingson, by Ella N. French, Teacher. This Hutchingson and French family item was found in the New England area in Manchester, New Hampshire NH in Hillsborough, Merrimack and Rockingham Counties. It is printed on an early coated stock paper, with a color litho scrap glued on vignette. Hutchinson, Hutch, Hutchens, Hutchenson, Hutcherson, Hutchins, and Hutcheoson are alternative spellings and derivatives of this surname. 1774 Knowlton, Rosetter: c. 1830-60's Small Reward of Merit or Friendship Card, VT Name handwritten on card front in old faded dip pen ink: Rosetter and Knowlton. On the back: Stockbridge, Vt. in the same hand. Stockbridge, Vermont is in Windsor County. We found both surnames Rosetter and Knowlton in Windsor County, Vermont area at Link on our site. Both surnames are listed in this area for marriages listed in the Windham Herald from 1796-1816. Card is very finely engraved. Found in New England, in Dorset, Vermont, Bennington County. 1775 Briggs: 1858-62 Civil War Era Pass Book for Paul D. Briggs This early green Civil War era bank book has all handwritten entries in old dip pen ink on blue paper. The top of the first page has the name Paul D. Briggs (Paul Briggs) in Account with M L & Co. The first entry is May 1, 1858, and the last is Settled May 19, 1862. The cover of the book says it was Manufactured by William H. Hill & Co., 32 Cornhill, Boston. It was found in the New England area, in Nashua, New Hampshire, in the area of Hillsborough, Merrimack and Rockingham Counties. Boston, Massachusetts is in Barnstable, Berkshire, Middlesex, Norfolk, Suffolk, Worcester Counties. The binding on the book is handstitched, the back cover missing. The items Mr. Briggs bought were molasses, cheese, vinegar, tea, flour, soap, nails, tacks, pegs, raisins, ginger, oil, snuff, lamps, and various other sundries. 1776 Metcalf: 1856 Announcement of the Worcester Highland School C.B. Metcalf, MA This is an original and scarce 1856 flyer advertising and announcing the formation of a new Boarding School called the Highland School, on Salisbury St., Worcester, Mass. to open on the 7th of October, 1856. This became known as the Highland Military Academy in later years. The address is the residence of C.B. Metcalf, A.M. Principal. Worcester, Massachusetts is in Worcester County. 1777 Turner, Sumner, Lord: 1877 Letter from Henry A. Turner & Co. to Professor W. G. Sumner, MA This handwritten letter is from Henry A. Turner & Co., Furniture, Upholstery Goods, 31 West St., Boston, and is dated April 20th, 1877, addressed to Prof. W. G. Sumner. The name Frederick W. Turner, also appears printed on the beautifully illustrated advertising billhead or letterhead. The letter bears the signature of N.T. 1778 Matthew, Frye, Mason : 1895 Receipt from J.C. Frye & Co. Wholesale Dealers in Flour, Butter, Cheese, Lard, Hams and Beans to E.C. Matthews, MA This receipt dated Nov. 22, 1895, is from J.C. Frye & Co. Wholesale Dealers in Flour, Butter, Cheese, Lard, Hams, Beans, Etc., 27 & 29 Commercial St., Boston., Telephone, Haymarket 17. The bill is made out to Mr. E.C. Matthews, and the letterhead has the names John C. Frye, Hale Mason, Jas M. Frye, and Chas. M. Frye printed on it. (John Frye, Hale Mason, James M. Frye or James Frye, Charles M. Frye or Charles Frye in census records) The receipt is marked paid Jan. 2/95 and signed with an illegible signature handwritten in pencil. 1780 Dodge & Straw: c. 1880's Advertising Trade Card for People's Shoe Store, NH This colorful lithograph depicts an elegantly dressed Victorian women and below the image is printed People's Shoe Store, Dodge & Straw, 937 Elm Steet, Manchester. It resembles a large unusual format cabinet card on heavy stock. It was found in the Nashua, New Hampshire area, making us assume that it is from Manchester, New Hampshire, Hillsborough County. 1792 Greene: c. 1870 & 1901 Reward of Merit Card & Greene Family Genealogy Book, NH These two pieces of family history of the Greene family, a Reward of Merit and family history book. The Reward of Merit Card has the names: Louisa Lagisse from L. Richardson written in old dip pen ink, and Mary R. Greene, Boscawen, N.H., written in pencil on back (Mary Greene). It was found inside the book. The family of Greene Book is a hardbound genealogy book printed in 1901, and has the history of the Greene Family in England and America. Boscawen, New Hampshire, is in Merrimack County. Both items were found in New Hampshire. This wonderful Greene family genealogy hardcover book from 1901 traces the Greene line.
