business related cards in Berkshire County, Massachusetts, MA. Card
is printed on heavy old off white cardstock with simple early American
typography font. These business cards give a wonderful look into early
advertising at the turn of the last century, as well as good genealogy
clues. Early Census and business records can also be of help in finding
these lost ancestors and their working whereabouts. Research into the
the architect, building and address they worked at may also provide

Found in Madison, New York, Madison County. This is a rare and wonderful one of a kind personal calling card of Cipriano Andrade. He was a rear admiral in the Civil War, and Chief Engineer of the Navy. He is was born in 1840 in Mexico to Cipriano and Elizabeth Edwards Andrade, and died in 1911 in Norwalk, Connecticut, Fairfield County. of the Prince of Wales in a Scottish kilt in 1849 gave rise to a considerable
vogue for pleated skirts and dresses. We found an article mentioning

1466 Evans: 1863 Ornate Victorian Envelope addressed
to Emma Evans, PA This is a beautifully embossed
cream colored Civil War era Victorian envelope addressed
to "Miss Emma
Evans, Present " handwritten in delicate script in old
dip pen ink. There is a trace of a postage stamp and post
mark with the letters BLA for the city and Pa. meaning
Pennsylvania. Also in faded pencil, it has handwritten --1863
Blairsville.-- Blairsville is in Indiana County, Pennsylvania.
There is nothing inside the envelope, it is empty. There
is remnants of red sealing wax on back. Found in Dorset, Vermont, Bennington County. Family Papers of Maria Thompson This is a wonderful small
collection of 3 items found all together. One is a handwritten page
in a diary belonging to Maria S. Thompson, second is her obituary,
and third is an 1860's CDV Civil War era photograph of her sister,
Mrs. Norman Webb of Birmingham, Alabama AL. 1.) Diary single paper
page reads, handwritten in pencil: "My
Great Grandmother's name was Ann Bean. She was married at Salisbury,
Massachusetts to Thomas Wells, who lived only a short time. She then
married Nathaniel Wells, brother to the first, and father to her children.
She had no children by her first husband, she was a Revolutionary War
pensioner. Maria S. Thompson. (Back page has illegible erased pencil
handwriting also) 2.) Obituary from newspaper (believed to be a Woburn,
MA newspaper) of Maria S. Thompson, Died Nov. 18, 1908 handwritten
at top, age 83. (Maria was born 1825.) Obit: Mrs. Maria S. Thompson
died last nite at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Joseph H. Buck,
(Joseph Buck) 55 Montvale Ave. Age 83. She had been an invalid for
many years, but the immediate death was a shock sustained three weeks
ago. Mrs. Thompson was born at Salisbury, NH, daughter ot John Wells
and Mary Wells Sherburn (Mary Sherburn). She is survived by a husband,
aged 86, a daughter, Mrs. Buck, and two sisters: Mrs. Norman Webb
of Birmingham, Alabama AL (see CDV photo of her attached) and Mrs.
George W. Bartlett (George Bartlett) of Salisbury, NH. Funeral Services
will be held at the Buck residence, Friday at 2PM and burial will
be at Woodbrook Cemetery, (Salem St.-crossed off in ink.) 3). 1860's

freight was a machine shipped from Syracuse aboard Canal Boat S.

signed by H.D. Hatch and Barker, Agents. There is a received
signature in red ink with the name of A.W. Johnson and Hawkins.

Boat of Captain Giddings, NY This
is an 1848 settlement paper bill for Captain Giddings
dated Nov. 27, 1848 for deliveries made on the Erie Canal
from Sept. 15 to Nov. 21. The names that appear on settlement
are: E.N. Buell, R. Allen, Gelston & Evans,
I. Bissell, M. Barnes, H. Doyle. The passages were made
between Rochester of Monroe County and Albany of Albany
County, New York State and were to carry cash safely

8, 1847, are made out to John T. Noye, Shipper,
aboard the Erie Canal Boat S. Parsons with A. Smith as
Captain. The names Noye & Davis and James Parsons,
and the cities Rochester and Albany also appear on the
waybill. The handwriting is in fancy script handwritten in
old dip pen ink and signed by John T. Noye along with
another illegible name which may be Mann. Buffalo is
in Erie County, Rochester is in Monroe County, Albany

cargos were 2600 barrels of wheat to Wisconsin, WI,

1477 Weisse, Hoyt, Gibbens: 1865 Receipt signed
by Stephen Hoyt, Mayor of New Orleans, LA This
is a receipt dated January 14, 1865 with the name Stephen
Hoyt, the mayor of New Orleans, from 1864-65 handwritten
on it. He was mayor of this Confederate city during
the Civil War from 2/9/1864 to 3/21/1865. Stephen Hoyt,
Vermont born partner and former St. Louis, Missouri
city comptroller, remained loyal to the Union and served
as mayor of occupied New Orleans. This receipt is to
the New Orleans Bee, For Baker's Tariff F. 4/3 and
the amount of $5. handwritten on it. The ornate logo on
the side of the receipt says G.F. Weisse & Co.,
who appear to be the owners of the New Orleans newspaper
called "The Bee". The back of the receipt has a taped
newspaper clipping that is handwritten in French and may
be the very advertising that this receipt represents.
It was handwritten by D. Gibbens, Stephen Hoyt's secretary.
New Orleans is in Jefferson Parish, Orleans Parish,

early advertising blotter is for Saint Paul Fire and
Marine Insurance Company, St. Paul, Minnesota, C.H.
Bigelow is President, F.R. Bigelow, Vice President,
and A.W. Perry is Secretary. It lists Mosher & Hoskins,
as Agents in Auburn, N.Y. The card shows an etching
of the home offices new building in St. Paul, built
1909, and the company was incorporated in 1865. St.
Paul, Minnesota is in Dakota, Hennepin, Ramsey, Saint
Louis, and Washington Counties. Auburn, New York is
in Cayuga County. A blotter is an absorbent paper in
the form of a card or strip, commonly used to absorb
excess ink from handwriting before immediate handling
of the manuscript. Blotters printed with advertising
messages were popular promotional giveaways during
the fountain pen era, and are now sought by collectors.

Handwritten over the card front in old dip pen ink is the following:
"Gentlemen, Mr. Wooley is not in the city. I have handwritten him, and
you will hear from him in a few days. Dec. 26th, 1897." State: New
York County: Kings, Queens, New York & Delaware
County. Found in a large collection of late 19th and early 20th century
printed business and attorney related cards in Berkshire County, Massachusetts,
MA. Card is printed on heavy old off white cardstock with simple early
American typography font. Research into the the architect, building
and address on this card may also provide good clues for this Wooley
family item. The Gerard Hotel was built in 1894 in NYC on 44th Street.
