It shows about 50 Howard family members looking at the camera, many and most with ribbons for this special day pinned to their suits and dreses. The back has handwritten in old pencil: Howard Family Reunion 1918. The roof of the early Howard family farmhouse has a large and wonderful Americana hand lettered folk art sign that reads "Howard Family Reunion". To the far right in the crowd proudly stands a Howard family elder, with long beard, looks to have been born in the 1840's. We feel he may be the Patriarch of the family. He could possibly the poem writer, Joseph Cushman Howard, although we canot confirm that. In pencil the name Joseph C. Howard is also handwritten on roof next to sign with date 1918. NOTE: There is also an 1916 printed paper poem with this photo which mentions the related Brown family home where this reunion was held. This was all found together at the same time in Madison County, New York, NY. Fryeburg and Stow Maine are both in Oxford County. Synopsis of poem reads: The Howard Reunion of 1916: The sixth annual reunion of the Howard family race, in the town of Fryeburg, has recently taken place. They gathered in Fryeburg village, where the ancient Indian race, in hoards of countless numbers, once inhabited this place. And was routed by emigrants, and afterwards was slain, and finally lost their foothold, that they had in Fryeburg, Maine. The Howards had a reunion, at the home of Mr. Brown, a member of the reunion and a resident of the town.....etc. This wonderful Joseph Howard family poem goes on for 16 stanzas, ending with the last paragraph: The artists snapped the photos of the Howard family band, while music from musicians, was inspiring and grand. Composed by Joseph C. Howard, Stow, Maine. Note from Fryeberg, Maine historical researcher David Crouse: The Howards are not, as far as I know, related to me. My interest in that family stems from the fact that I have been collecting data on families in the area of Fryeburg, Maine, for over thirty years. Some folks consider me to be the unofficial historian of the town of Stow, Maine (where I was born), which lies just north of Fryeburg. For the past fourteen years I have been publishing (three times a year) a modest historical/genealogical newsletter called the "Cold River Chronicle," which covers four towns in Maine (Stow, Fryeburg, Lovell and Stoneham) and one in adjacent New Hampshire (Chatham). Over the years I have printed several poems of Joseph Howard in this newsletter and was very excited to find another at Ancestorville. Joseph was born in Lovell, Maine (adjacent to Stow), in 1845, and died in Stow in 1922. He was a farmer, but is better remembered for his poems. Mr. Brown, referred to in the poem, was Loring Brown (1848-1926), who in 1873, married Joseph Howard's sister, Emma Howard (1848-1940), and lived in Fryeburg Village, where Loring was a carpenter. You speculate that the man on the far right of the photo may be Joseph C. Howard. I wish I could confirm that, but unfortunately I have never come across a picture of him. This cdv photo has a very fancy all over design printed photographer backmark. It features Victorian advertising fancy calligraphy text. Notes from a related Shepardson family member, who bought this and item number #1378, this boy's mother: My family (Shepardson) has been in Royalston, MA since 1790. Royalston is right next to Athol. In the early 1800's my GGGgrandfather's sister married George Washington Moore of Athol. I believe that the woman in the Moore photo is my GGGGAunt MILLIE SHEPARDSON, b. 25 March 1812, Royalston, MA, d. 1893, Athol, MA. The other related photo, that I ordered separately, is of E.C. Shepardson. I believe this photo is of Millie Shepardson's nephew, Edmund Cincinnatus Shepardson, born in 1847, Royalston, MA. He disliked the name and on Feb. 1, 1870 legally changed it to "Edmund C. Shepardson". He lived in Athol (Worcester County) most of his life. Edmund was my GGgrandfather's older brother.
