1971 Dumas: 1870-80's Stereoview Photo of Boar's Head Hotel run by Stebbins Dumas NH Info printed on stereoview photograph back: An advertising slogan and boar's head logo, and long description of the Boar's Head Hotel, Hampton Beach, N.H., S.H. Dumas & Sons, Proprietors. The hotel opened in 1826. There is extensive biographical info on Stebbins Dumas at link below. Hampton Beach, New Hampshire, is in Rockingham County. Photo Type: Stereoview Photograph Found in Manchester, New Hampshire NH in Hillsborough, Merrimack and Rockingham Counties. ----->OBITUARY: "Col. Stebbins H. Dumas, (Stebbins H. Dumas) the popular landlord of the Boar's Head Hotel of Hampton Beach, N.H., for fully forty years, died Monday [Feb. 10], at his home in Concord, NH, at the age of 74 years. The news will be received with sorrow by a very wide circle of friends who have patronized this well-known and fashionable resort for years, and included among the number will be many politicians who delighted to gather there. Gen. Dumas won his way in life by his own efforts. He was at one time a bell boy in the Phoenix Hotel at Concord, N.H., and years later he was the proprietor of the same hotel. Other hostelries which have been the gainers in past years by his management are the Squamscot House in Exeter, N.H. and the Haymarket Hotel at Boston. At Hampton Beach the Boar's Head Hotel stood on the top of the bluff from which it took its name. Col. Dumas used to say, when questioned in regard to the length of his stay there: "I have owned and managed this place more years that I care to own up to." The hotel was burned in November, 1893. The old house had been a landmark on both land and sea for a quarter of a century. In June, 1894, he opened the hotel at the foot of the bluff and called it the New Boar's Head Hotel. Col. Dumas leaves a daughter Anita (Anita Dumas). The funeral was held at his Concord home on Thursday noon." The 1900 census of Concord, NH states that he was born in Vermont in February 1830, but this date doesn't match with his age as given at other points in his life. His age at death as given in the obituary above suggests that he was born in 1827 or 1828. The 1870 census of Concord states that he was aged 43 at that time, projecting a birth date in either 1826 or 1827. An 83-year-old Julian Dumas was living with him who might be his father. Also living with him was a son Edward P. Dumas (Edward Dumas), age 16, born in NH, as well as his daughter Anita Q. Dumas, age 9, also born in NH. The 1860 census of Concord, NH gives his age as 33, consistent with the birth date of 1826 or 1827. Living with him at the time were his 29-year-old wife Anna Dumas and his 6-year-old son Edward P. Dumas. He was age 24 in the 1850 census of Concord. The 1830 census of Waitsfield, Vermont has the familiy of Julien Dumas and it shows him as having two sons under the age of five. This Julien is likely his father, based on the fact that Julien was living with Stebbins in 1870. Julien was born in Canada. Stebbins' wife was named Anna Woods or Annie Woods. His son Edward apparently pre-deceased him, but his daughter Anita, who was born in Concord, NH in March 1861, married on March 29, 1884 to William O. Taylor (William Taylor) of Hampton. She died in Limerick, Pennsylvania in March 1910. [Source: Family history: Anthony Taylor of Hampton, New Hampshire, founder, pioneer, town father, and some of his descendants, 1635-1935 / compiled, edited and published by Harold Murdock Taylor (Rutland, VT: Tuttle, 1935), p.353. The Hampton Union, Friday, February 14, 1902 Col. Stebbins H. Dumas, the popular landlord of the Boar's Head Hotel of Hampton Beach, N.H., for fully forty years, died Monday [Feb. 10], at his home in Concord, NH, at the age of 74 years. Notes from a family member who bought this piece: "Mrs. A.V. Boardman is Mrs Adrian Volkart Boardman (Adrian Boardman) or Jane (Harrison) Boardman, who was born in England. She was Adrian Boardman's 3rd (and Last) wife. They are buried in Oakwood Cemetery in Chittenango, NY, Madison County, (not Cazenovia), however her husband's mother is buried in Evergreen Cemetery in Cazenovia. Adrian died in 1889 at the age of 79. His first wife's name was Elizabeth (Betsey) Shaver (Elizabeth Shaver or Betsy Shaver). She died shortly after their daughter, Elizabeth Laura Boardman, (Elizabeth Boardman) was born in 1839. Adrian then married my great great great grandmother, Lavinia Louer, in 1840 or 1841 (Lavinia Boardman). Lavinia had 3 sons, Charles A.V. (Charles Boardman), George LeGrange Boardman (George Boardman) and Miles Austin Boardman (Miles Boardman). 4 months after the birth of their 4th son, James Ezra (James Boardman), Lavinia died (July 1853), and the baby, James died in August 1853. Adrian was a tailor by trade, as was his father, Seth Boardman in Cazenovia. They moved to Chittenango sometime in the early to mid 1800's. Adrian was in business with a VanVaulkenberg (or Van Vaulkenberg) family gentleman and when he passed away, Adrian went into business with Jane Harrison's brother, Robert Harrison. I suppose this is how Adrian met Jane. Adrian and Jane had 3 more children, Georgiana Boardman (who died in early childhood ), Henry Harrison Boardman (Henry Boardman) and another Georgia Boardman or Georgiana Boardman. I have quite a bit of information on some of the family but my great great great grandmother, Lavinia Louer Boardman, has been my "brickwall" for many years. My great Aunt worked on our family history for a very long time and she passed away a year ago at the age of 97. I wish we could have uncovered more info on Lavinia while my Great Aunt was still with us. There's alot of Lower Louer information, just nothing to specifically tie Lavinia to any one of the particular families." A wonderful Boardman family history, Cazenovia town history, and many many more piece.
