239 McNelley: c. 1870-80's
CDV Carte de Visite Photograph
of James McNelley, NY Written on Photo: We have 2 different
photos of
James McNelley as a young child, and one of Mrs. Peter McNelley, with
names written in pencil on reverse on our ancestor site. This photo
is of James McNelley. Photo Type: CDV Carte de Visite Photograph.
Approximate Age: circa 1870-80's. Photographer name: W.G. Smith.
Photographer City: Cooperstown. State: New York. County: Ostego County. The
McNelley photographs on our site were found together and removed
from photo albums found in the Northampton area of Massachusetts and
New England over the years. The collector meticulously wrote the
name of each family member, as they were written under the photos in
the decrepit albums. The name here could be either McNalley or McNelley.
Northampton, Massachusetts is in Hampshire County. The McNalley
family surname is also evident n the Cooperstown area during that time
period. There is a McNalley family / McNelley family plot in Cooperstown
cenetery. All three Cooperstown McNelley family members on
our site were taken by the same Smith photographer with a likeness
of the famous 19th c. author James Fenimore Cooper statue in Cooperstown
printed on the back. Cooper (b. 1789; died in Cooperstown 1851)
is featured on the statue with his dog and Leatherstocking name under.
Cooper was buried in the Episcopal Church yard in 1851, and a
monument was erected there, with a statue of "Leatherstocking," and
bearing as a sufficient inscription the author's name in full,
with the dates of his birth and death. The monument in Cooper's
memory of white Italian marble, with the statuette of Leather-Stocking
at the top, was sculptured by Robert Launitz, (Robert E.
Launitz) and erected in the spring of 1860. The small
bronze casts of this statuette, which one would then see in
some of the older Victorian homes in Cooperstown, belong to the same
period. See Item #3060, #3032 and #239 for McNelley/McNalley
Grouping found together on our site. A wonderful McNelley family
