2351 Hooper: c. 1880's Photograph of an early Hooper Cemetery Gravestone & Church This is an unusual early vintage photograph mounted under glass on a solid plaque-like frame. At one time the frame had a gold velveteen cover, now worn thin with age. The image itself is of a graveyard with an old stone church in the background. The most legible stone bears the names of Grace, wife of George Hooper. (Grace Hooper) Her date of death was January 9, of what looks like 1831, 1851, 1863 or 1881 or 1883. It looks the most like 1881. She was 61 years old. The stone reads "Sacred to the memory of Grace, wife of George Hooper." This wonderful early photographic plaque was found in Nashua, New Hampshire, in Hillsborough County, however the setting could quite possibly be an old church in England. At one time the frame stood up alone on a cardboard easel backing. This is torn off. It would still hang on a wall, as it has a metal hanger. 2383 Ballou: 1860-70's Stereoview Photograph of Ballou Family Statue Monument This is an interesting early Civil War era yellow mount stereoview photograph of a large figural monument, appears to be in a cemetery. The statue is a full wonderful early (appears to be 1850's) life monument of a man in suitcoat, has a draped fabric over left side and something in his hand. Simply the surname BALLOU is engraved in stone in bottom in large letters on the monument. There are graves within a cast iron Victorian fence behind him, may be a Ballou family plot, or not. This is not your typical gravestone, looks very much like a commissioned monument to memorialize an esteemed Ballou family member. Do you know where this is? Is he the famous utopian minister Hosea Ballou described below? Do you know where this marker is today? We'd love to know. There is no marking on the stereoview photo whatsoever. Hosea Ballou died in 1852, which would make sense for the time period of this stereoview. We cannot find any indication that this monument still stands. Wiki article: "Hosea Ballou (April 30, 1771-June 7, 1852) was an American Universalist clergyman and theological writer. He was born in Richmond, New Hampshire (Cheshire County). The son of Maturin Ballou, a Baptist minister, he was self-educated, and devoted himself early on to the ministry. In 1789 he converted to Universalism, and in 1794 became a pastor of a congregation in Dana, Massachusetts (Worcester County). He preached at Barnard, Vermont (Windsor County) and surrounding towns in 1801-1807; at Portsmouth, New Hampshire (Rockingham County) in 1807-1815; at Salem, Massachusetts (Essex county) in 1815-1817; and as pastor of the Second Universalist Church in Boston (essex, Suffolk and Middlesex Counties) from December 1817 until his death there. He founded and edited The Universalist Magazine (1819 -- later called The Trumpet), and The Universalist Expositor (1831 -- later The Universalist Quarterly Review), and wrote 10,000 sermons as well as many hymns, essays and polemic theological works. He is best known for Notes on the Parables (1804), A Treatise on Atonement (1805) and Examination of the Doctrine of a Future Retribution (1834). These works mark him as the principal American expositor of Universalism." A wonderful Ballou family piece, Ballou genealogy piece. Can you solve this Ancestorville mystery?
