Families would hire photographers to take pictures of their houses to be seen in stereoviewers, which were all the rage. William Claflin was Governor of Massachusetts from 1869-72. He is most likely is him seated in front of the house with a young boy, 3 women and another gentleman. Photo Type: Dry Mount Approximate Age: circa 1890's This is a wonderful early historical scene of an early Weslyan Methodist church in Fargo, Ohio in Morrow County, Ohio. Fargo is in or near Marengo, Ohio (Bennington Township, Morrow County). Church history and founders from web research: The chruch was started in 1839 in Utica New York, in Oneida County. The Wesleyan Church in America (formerly was also known as the Wesleyan Methodist) was formed from a split of the Methodist Episcopal Church over the issue of African American slavery. Original organizers were: Reverend Orange Scott, LaRoy Sunderland, abolitionist Lucious C. Matlack (Lucious Matlock), and Luther Lee, a minister who later operated an Underground Railroad station in Syracuse, New York in Onondaga County. From Wikipedia article: "In addition to anti-slavery, the early Wesleyan Methodists championed the rights of women. The Wesleyan Chapel in Seneca Falls, New York hosted the first Women's Rights Convention in 1848, also known as the Seneca Falls Convention. (Seneca County). Luther Lee, General President in 1856, ordained the very first woman to the Christian ministry in the United States at Oberlin College, Ohio. A Canadian group which merged into the Wesleyan church and mentioned in the next paragraph, ordained the very first woman to the ministry in Canada in the late 1800s. We do not know the identity of the woman in the photo, but think it's grand to have an early San Fran photographer's image! This delightful diecut advertising piece opens and has 2 popular childrens nursery rhymes in the inside with Ewarts Coffee worked into the illustrations. There are also recipes for making coffee, 1880's style, and for cafe au lait. It has a minor 1/2 inch tear on back page with no paper loss, unobtrusive and hardly seen. The printer is M.T. Nevins. A member of the Chestnut Hill Mennonite congregation. She leaves her husband, Adam Heidlauf and a son named Phares. A sister, wife of Aaron Leonard. Services in the Silver Spring U.B. Church by Bros. Isaac H. Brubaker and Seth Ebersole. We feel quite certian this info may be related to these families, as the name Phares Heidlauf is an unusual name.
