Adjutant William Kirkland Bacon of the 26th Regiment of New York
State Volunteers, born February 15, 1842, died in the Battle of Fredericksburg,
December 16, 1862. (Adjutant: A staff officer who helps a commanding
officer with administrative affairs) There is a beautiful line engraving
likeness of Willie on front pages. The book was written by William
Johnson Bacon his father, and mother Eliza Kirkland Bacon from Utica,

York, 1863. Utica is in Oneida and Onondaga County. Willie Bacon
was hit Dec, 15th, had his leg amputated, and died within the next
few days. This book is a wonderful, loving tribute presumably by
a wealthy upper class father to his lost and beloved 20 year old son during the
Civil War. He explains their genealogy line by saying that William
was named after William Bacon of Stretton, Rutlandshire, England
their "remotest
ancestor." His
son, Nathaniel Bacon came to Plymouth, Massachusetts and settled at
Barnstable, Mass. in 1640. He was also named after his Uncle William
Kirkland, who died many years before the book begins. Other people
in their line: John Bacon, Ezekial Bacon, Gen, Joseph Kirkland, Cousins
Edward Kirkland and Charles Kirkland, Cousin Lieut. "Neddy" or Edward
Thornton Kirkland, Cousin Julia Holley. He mentions history of the
regiment, including many other names. Black embossed cover is off
the book, but intact. All pages intact, with some water staining.
A touching and scarce Bacon family tribute. Found in New York State,
in Oswego County NY. This actual book is for sale, but the scan available
