Meeker, and F. M. Rood was the Poultney area photographer for this stereoview company. Photographer City: Rutland. State: Vermont. County: Rutland County. With magnification you can see one grave is inscribed Henry O., son of Moses O. or C. and Jane S. Perkins, died 1853 or 1858 is handwritten there, the rest is obscured by greenery and flowers. There is a large decorative cast iron Victorian urn visible behind. It is assumed Bert Perkins is in the other grave. The Adams name may be related to Perkins here also. Bert may be a nickname for Bertha. In census records name may be Bertha Perkins, Henry Perkins, Moses Perkins, and Jane Perkins. We do not know what Monroe County business the Carroll, Hutchings, Southard & Company ran, do you? They certainly had a large amount of real estate on Main Street in Rochester to do business in. (Note: Juliette Nexsen is a 19th c. woman photographer) Photographer address: No. 37 Union Square, West Side, Rooms 9 and 11. New York. County: New York County. Photo is slightly trimmed on bottom edge, usually to fit into photo albums, as many were. Does not affect his image in any way. This man looks to be a clergy or reverend, has a black silk vest and white silk tie, age about in his late sixties. The photo is somewhat light in tone, but his face can be seen well. We found evidence of Stephen Merritt, listed as an undertaker (and a minister in earlier records) in the 1870 census. He was married to Phoebe Merritt, both born around 1800. Phoebe was born in New Jersey and he in New York. A relative, Catharine Merritt, age 67 was also living with them, as well as a young (probably apprentice) undertaker named Alfred Holland. Census records list his residence as New York Ward 16 District 5 (2nd Enum), New York City, New York County. There was a well known Stephen J. Merritt, a New York City clergyman and undertaker to celebrities and Manhattan's upper class. He was famous for being the undertaker to Ullysses S. Grant. We feel this is likely him.
