574 Bright: 1860-70's CDV Carte de Visite Engraving of British Quaker John Bright (1811-1889) Written on Photo: John Bright written in pencil. Photo Type: CDV Carte de Visite Photograph, Religious engraving. Approximate Age: circa 1860`s. Found in Northampton, Massachusetts, in Hampshire County MA. This is an engraved portrait of British religion radical and statesman, John Bright. It has a painterly quality to it. He was was a 19th century politician, a member of parliament and the first Quaker to be a cabinet minister. He was born in 1811 to Mary Wood Bright (Mary Bright) and Quaker Jacob Bright, and had 10 brothers and sisters. His Grandfather was Abraham Bright. In 1839 John married a fellow Quaker, Elizabeth Priestman. Elizabeth died of consumption in September 1841, leaving Bright with one daughter. In 1847 Bright married Margaret Elizabeth Leatham, (Margaret E. Leatham, Margaret Leatham) another Quaker. She took an interest in politics. They had four sons and three daughters, with John Albert Bright being the eldest. Bright was buried in the graveyard of the meeting-house of the Religious Society of Friends in Rochdale in 1889. (Hamill is the photographer) Underneath this is the pencil signed handwriting of the name of the woman in the photograph. Appears to say Chatty Dickie or Charity Dickie & Frank handwritten in very, very light pencil. Is the baby's name Frank Dickie, Francis Dickie or Franklin Dickie in census records? The photo is a stunning shot of a young mother looking straight into the camera holding her Civil war era baby wearing his fancy handmade short frock suit. Is the father off to war? The photo is beautiful under magnification. We found Charity Dickie and her son Frank Dickie in census records, she born 1835 in Pennsylvania and her son Frank in 1862 in Illinois. 580 Leroy: 1878 CDV Photo of Captain Benjamin Leroy, Soldier of 1812, OH This is a very interesting historical American CDV image of Captain Benjamin LeRoy at 98 years old. He was a veteran of the War of 1812 and the famous battle of Lundy's Lane. The image is of a very old man with very long white hair and beard. He is wearing a Civil War Era Federal sack coat and has a large pin or medal on his vest. The photo is from Dayton, Ohio, (Greene or Montgomery County) we expect that it was made while he was a resident of the soldiers home there. Printed on the back of the card is: "Capt. Benjamin LeRoy, Soldier of 1812, Veteran of Lundy's Lane, 98 years of Age, J.B. Gross Photographer, No. 28 South Main Street, Dayton, Ohio. All work warranted satisfactory." Note: Also handwritten on the back in old period ink is "Rec'd Sept 1, 1878 He lived to the age of 103." The Battle of Lundy's Lane was a battle of the War of 1812 on July 25, 1814, fought in present day Niagara Falls, Ontario. It was the bloodiest battle ever fought in Canada. Benjamin would have been born in the 1770's and is one of the earliest born ancestor photographs at Ancestorville. Found in Yipslanti, Michigan in Washtenaw County. 585 Cobb, Bates, Yerxa: c. 1870-80's Advertising Trade Card for Cobb, Bates & Yerxa Grocers, MA Printed on card: Cobb, Bates & Yerxa, Largest Grocers in New England, 686-692 Washington St., Boston. Note: Boston, Massachusetts is Barnstable, Berkshire, Middlesex, Norfolk, Suffolk, and Worcester County. This is a large card with a bright pink rose scene. These Grocers were very prominent in New England and considered a very influential grocery firm. Yerkes is also one alternative spelling for the Yerxa surname. Found in Greenfield, Massachusetts, in Franklin County MA. Notes from a Yerxa related family member: YERXA / MILES: "My grandfather, Frank Edgar Miles, who was born in 1877, in Stanley, York, New Brunswick, Canada came to the US at the age of 17. He went to work for Cobb, Bates & Yerxa in Boston, MA. Henry Detrick Yerxa was the founder of that great grocery firm. Henry Yerxa and my grandfather were 1st cousins 2 times removed. This is where my grandfather first learned the grocery business. In about 1902 he moved to Fargo, ND (Cass County) where he worked at the Yerxa Mercantile Store. John Pritchard Yerxa was the proprietor of the retail grocery store. John P. Yerxa was my grandfather’s uncle. Later my grandfather moved to Goldfield, Nevada where he worked as a clerk in a grocery store (H.W. Miles & Co.). This Henry W. Miles (Henry Miles) was not a relative. Frank then moved to Orange County CA where he owned and operated a grocery store chain. I have a picture of his delivery truck which says “Miles, The Cash Grocer” on the side.
