(BIO: Lewis Morris (October 15, 1671 - May 21, 1746), chief justice of New York and British governor of New Jersey, was the first lord of the manor of Morrisania in New York (in what is now the Bronx). He married "Tryntie" Staats in 1722 (his first wife) and they had 4 Children: Mary Morris, General Lewis Morris-the Signer, Mary Walton, Richard Morris, and General Staats Long Morris. Lewis Morris was appointed acting governor of New York in 1731. In 1738, New Jersey petitioned the crown for a distinct administration from New York, and Lewis Morris served as Governor of New Jersey until his death. He was the grandfather of Lewis Morris (1726-1798) an American landowner and developer from Morrisania, New York. who signed the U.S. Declaration of Independence as a delegate to the Continental Congress for New York. This Morris family was instrumental to the Revolutionary war and general history of New Jersey and New York State.) Another photograph we have on our site is a related Graham family member, James Graham Marquis of Montrose, item #909. Notes From Morris family researcher and author Melanie Miller on Gouverneur Morris (1752-1816): Katrintje Staats was the first wife of Gouverneur's father, Lewis Morris; Gouverneur's mother was Sarah Staats Morris, a niece and cousin of Katrinje -- so there is a blood relationship with GM, even though indirect. I wonder what happened to the original painting of this photograph; there are surviving Gouverneur Morris descendants, but I haven't yet located them. The picture would have hung in the family manor house at Morrisania, in the Bronx. Gouverneur was an amazing man -- a major contributor to the American Constitution, and our minister to France during the French Revolution; very funny, very eloquent, and he admired and respected women, not the usual in those days. You can find Melanie's book, "Envoy to the Terror", at online bookstores.
