2451 Banigan, Cook: c. 1870-80's Victorian Advertising Trade Card for Woonsocket Rubber Boots Printed on card: "If you Want the Best Rubber Boots and Shoes in the Market buy the New Woonsockets." This fun Victorian illustration shows 2 boys sledding down a hill in giant boot sleighs. The one in the lead, presumably in a Woonsocket Boot, has a Woonsocket flag in the stars and stripes pattern. The caption reads: "Woonsocket Arctics' Always Ahead!" Woonsocket, Rhode Island is in Providence County. Simeon Cook, Lyman Cook and Joseph Banigan incorporated the Woonsocket RI Rubber Company in 1867. This card appears to have the left and right borders slightly trimmed. There is a small piece of cellophane tape on back also. This photograph was removed from a photo album found in the Northampton area of Massachusetts, Hampshire County. The collector, (whom we have worked with on thousands of items) carefully rewrote the family names as they were originally written on the decrepit album sleeves. Often the early antique photo albums do not stand the test of time. We have 3 related Foley on our ancestor site. Kate, Ed, and Lizzie. The two older children are taken in the same high style carved Victorian chair. The baby photo is a close up. We feel the 3 photographs were taken on the same day by proud Foley parents who took them to the Weber gallery. Each photo has a beveled gold leaf edge. Kate has gold earrings, naturally curly ringlets, a gold chatelaine cross around her neck and is a beautiful child. She is the oldest, about years. This is a wonderful photograph of a Grandpa sitting on a chair with his cane, a young baby, a young boy in a dress holding his cane and a beautiful handmade folk art rag rug under his chair, and another rag rug under his feet. His hat is upside down on ground nearby. NOTE: In the Victorian era, boys wore frocks with pleated skirts, or tunics and blouses over pleated skirts, until the age of three or five. A popular portrait of the Prince of Wales in a Scottish kilt in 1849 gave rise to a considerable vogue for pleated skirts and dresses. Photo type: CDV or Carte de Visite Photograph. Approximate age: 1860's. Photographer Name & Address: J.D. Vickery, Photographic Artist, Bath, N.Y., Steuben County. This is a beautiful Civil War era CDV of a minister named Abram F. Countryman. In census records he is listed as a Methodist preacher, born about 1836. He lived in Sparta NY in Livingston County in 1900. He married Elizabeth A. Countryman (Elizabeth Countryman) and had a brother named Addison Countryman and a sister in law named Ursula D. Countryman (Ursula Countryman) who lived with him in 1900 census. Abram's family in 1850 census records: Father John Countryman and Mother Sarah Countryman, each born about 1800. Siblings: Louiza Countryman or Louisa Countryman, Catharine Countryman or Catherine Countryman, Addison Countryman, Marion Countryman, Margaret Countryman, Emma Countryman, and a baby brother named Bendon Countryman (?), name illegible in census records. In 1920 Census Records we find his sister Margaret E. Baterman (Margaret E. Countryman) living in Sparta, Livingston County, New York. (Sparta is near Dansville NY which is in Steuben County) Age: 77 years, Birth year: abt 1843. Birthplace: New York. Wife of Charles A. Baterman (Charles Baterman). Living with her is Elizabeth Countryman, age 81, a sister? She has two sons, one named Ray Baterman (possibly Raymond Baterman) and the other named Clair Baterman? Clain Baterman? Clare Baterman? Name is illegible in records. We found evidence of an Abram Countryman who served in the Civil War, in the 20th Regiment NY Cavalry, Company G, listed in some records also as Abraham Countryman. Interestingly, we have an 1847 book owned by Abram Countryman item #310 on our site that was not found with this, although it could easily be from this family if these items are out floating in the world. 2460 McNab: c. 1900 Advertising Trade Card for McNab Bros. Grocers, Manchester NH Printed on card: Compliments of McNab Brothers, 758 Elm St. Manchester, New Hampshire. Dealer of Choice Groceries, Meats and Provisions. Flour of all Grades. This litho trade card depicts a couple on horseback with their hunting dogs, ducks flying up in the distance. The card looks like it had once been removed from a scrapbook. Manchester, New Hampshire, is in Hillsborough, Merrimack, and Rockingham Counties. Found in Franklin County, Western Massachusetts, MA. 2461 Chatterson: 1840-60's Brass Stationary Stencil of Louisa Chatterson This is a beautiful small brass handmade and hand punched stencil with the name "Louisa Chatterson" punched in it. These stencils were used to mark the front of school and regular books, envelopes, calling cards, diaries, journals, letters, clothing, fabric, quilts, and ephemera objects in general with the family names of the 19th c. ancestors. It measures 2.5 x 1.25 inches, and is made of brass with a lip around edge. One would put ink or powdered paint in the stencil, and it would clearly mark their name on the object. The typography of the end result and text of Louisa has an Americana folk art feeling to it. This old Chatterson brass name stencil was found in the area of Rhinebeck NY, a high Victorian era town in the areas of Ulster, Columbia and Dutchess Counties, New York State, NY. We found a Louisa Chatterson who married Fred Spencer in Cairo and in Acra, New York NY, Greene County, 30 miles from the place where this item was found. Census records might read Frederick Spencer, Fredrick Spencer, Frederic Spencer, Frederich Spencer, Frederico Spencer, Frederik Spencer, Fredric Spencer, Fredrik Spencer, Wilfred Spencer, or Alfred Spencer. It has a rubber stamp that says the Leigh & Prindle store name. It looks to have been removed from a scrapbook, and has glue and paper remaining on reverse. Edges are a bit rough, as seen in scan. 2472 Rice: 1909 Real Photo Postcard from Coney Island Amusement Park to Mrs. A. Rice, MA, NY Written on postcard: "Aug. 22, '09 Just having fun time, Yours Truly. (unsigned) Addressed to: Mrs. A. Rice, 349 Moody St., Waltham, Mass." This Coney Island Photo Postcard was printed in Germany, and shows a picture of Dreamland Tower. The green one cent postage stamp has "Coney Island" stamped on top of it, and there is a postal stamp from Brooklyn, N.Y. Station and is dated Aug. 23, 1909. Waltham, Massachusetts, is in Middlesex County. Coney Island, New York, is in Kings County, and Brooklyn is in Kings, and Queens, Counties. Barnum paid the London Zoo $10,000 to buy the elephant named Jumbo. He was the largest in the world and measured 10 feet 10 inches tall, weighing 8 tons. Jumbo was shown at Barnums' Hippodrome that year and he traveled in an specially designed palace cars across America with millions of people paying to see him. Crittenden. This is advertising poster or broadside for the Tri-Continental Syndicate of Physicians & Surgeons, and their traveling FREE LECTURE, Every Night at 8 o'clock. Dr. Farlin lectures about the Laws of Life and Health, Dr. Alonson Galloway, is a celebrated Chemist and Formulator, and Dr. S.C. Crittenden is the Late visiting Physician to the New York Infirmary and Charity Hospital, Late President of the National Medical Institute, Washington D.C. The poster reads: "Come see them make the Lame Walk, the Blind See, and the Deaf Hear." This delightful sign is set in type consisitant with the era along with the language and "snake oil" subject matter. It is printed on a lightweight newsprint paper. There is an area at the bottom, whereby the place of the event would have been filled in, as they travelled city to city giving the lecture. A wonderful early medical piece. The poster states that Dr. Galloway has decided to make the Flower City his home. Rochester, New York, in Monroe County is known as the Flower City. 2487 Engle, Reid: c. 1870-80 Advertising Trade Card for Stephen Engle Monumental Clock, PA Printed on card: Stephen D. Engle. During the last quarter of the 19th large Monumental Clocks became of great interest. The timepieces were valued for their ornate intricacy rather than for their time keeping. Stephen D. Engle (1837-1921) was the first American to make one of these famous clocks. The Engle Clock was called the 8th Wonder of the World, and was built in Hazleton, Pennsylvania, taking over 20 years to build, completed in 1878. It can currently be seen at the The National Watch and Clock Museum in Columbia, PA. This trade card features an illustration of the clock as well as detailed information on the back. Engle turned the management of it over to Captain Jacob Reid and his wife, Philadelphia entrepreneurs who toured this famous antique clock around the country.
