Babbitt: c. 1876 Advertising Trade Card for B.T. Babbitt's Medicinal
Yeast, NY Printed on card: B.T. Babbit's Medicinal Yeast,
New York City. Printed by Hatch Litho Company, New York. This is
a wonderful Victorian era trade card depicting children playing or
fishing near the water. It shows a case of Babbitt's 1776 Yeast.
The 1776-1876 centennial was a very celebrated American patriotic
event in Philadelphia PA. Manhattan, New York, is in Kings, and New
York, and Queens, Delaware County. This trade card is clean, back
shows a staining line around it, as if it had been soaked off a scrapbook
page at one time, a fad in the Victorian era. Found in Ulster County,
NY. From this website: "Benjamin Talbot Babbitt was an ambitious entrepreneur and inventor who built his fortune in a spectacular business career. He was a skilled master mechanic, chemist, brilliant salesman, and shrewd financier. He prospered in the chemical industry and successfully developed and manufactured such products as baking soda, "Star Yeast Powder," and "Babbitt's Best Soap. He died in 1889 at 80 years of age, and left his daughter Lillia Babbitt Hyde (1856-1939) one-half of his $5,000,000 estate as well as the controlling interest in his company, B. T. has glue marks on back in 4 corners, as if once removed from a scrapbook,
a huge Victorian era fad. Found in Manchester, New Hampshire NH in

2204 Cavin, Casement, Kennedy: 1842-1936 Victorian Family Register of the Cavin family This is an absolutely beautiful early handwritten family register of the Cavin family starting in 1842 and ending in 1936. It is double sided, and has the births and deaths of family members, marriages and pertinent information, such as Mary Cavin who "died in New York, America supposed to be in the year 1883, month unknown." It starts with Samuel Cavin marrying Jane kennedy on May 18, 1842. William Kennedy Cavin was born in 1843. The other family names are their children: Elizabeth Cavin, Mary Cavin (born 1847, she is the family member who we know went to America and died in 1883), Jane Cavin, Anna Jemima Cavin, Julius Casement Cavin (who died in Glasgow in 1901), Emily Malvina Cavin, Florinda Amelia Cavin, and Samuel Henry Cavin. In 1871 Scotland Census Records we find: Samuel Cavin. Age: 30. Birth year: abt 1841. Spouse`s name : Jane. Where born: Kirkton, Kirkcudbrightshire. Civil parish: Buittle. County: Kirkcudbrightshire. Address: East Logan Cothouse. Occupation: Farm Servant. Household Members: Annie Cavin, 3. James Cavin, 20. Jane Cavin, 37. Samuel Cavin, 30. We believe their son Samuel went to America and this may be him: 1910 US Ohio census Records: Name: Samuel H Cavin. Birthplace: Ireland. Age: 55. County: Cuyahoga, Cleveland. Wife is Carrie L. Cavin, (Carrie Cavin) age 45, born in New York. We also believe this register to have family members in England, Scotland, Ireland and USA. Card of Great American Tea Co., NY, NJ Name and text written on
card: The Great American Tea Co., Importers, Coffee Roasters and
Packers, 31 & 33
Vesey St., P.O. Box 289, New York. Note: Manhattan, New York, is in Kings Queens
and New York County. This has a wonderful sweeping landscape scene
of the city of Asbury Park, New Jersey in Monmouth county. This was found
in Berkshire County, Massachusetts, MA. History: In the mid 19th century, The Great
American Tea Company opened their first store on Vesey Street in New York City
and sold tea, coffee and spices at lower prices. In 1870 the
Company was renamed the Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company, in
honor of the first transcontinental railroad and hopes of expanding across
the continent. The business founders were George Huntington Hartford (1833 - August
29, 1917) and George Gilman who teamed up in 1859 in Elmira, New York. A&P sold more than
any other company in the world and had almost 16,000 stores in
the US. The back of this card has bold black American Advertising text which reads: "WHY
USE TRASH? WHEN YOU CAN SEND TO THE GREAT AMERICAN TEA COMPANY, 31 & 33
VESEY ST. NY AND GET PURE TEAS & COFFEES FOR LESS MONEY.

2211 Tolin, Varnum: 1880-90`s Cabinet Card Mourning Photograph of Susan Varnum Tolin, IL This is a beautiful old cabinet card photograph of the likeness of Susan Varnum Tolin, in which is handwritten on the back in pencil. We believe that these photographs of early drawings and artwork are of the deceased and done in memoriam. We found Susan V. Tolin in census records. She married Ninian Tolin on Dec. 24th 1851. (Christmas eve). They had a daughter named Mary Tolin. Susan`s middle name began with an S. She is related to Justus Varnum, and Jewett Varnum, of which there is much info on the web as to their lives in Monroe County, Illinois. We believe they were her brothers. Overall, this is a well known early Illinois family. The photo was taken by L. Fults Studio on Main Street in Waterloo, Illinois, which is in Monroe County. genuine unless signed "I. Butts" on the wrapper.
This small but very quaint Wistar's balsam medical American
advertising trade card was found in the Franklin County,
Massachusetts MA, New England area. It depicts a log cabin
scene with sheep and bull in a pen, on front. The back has
extensive antique medical text on the curing nature of Wistar's for coughs,
colds, bronchitis, sore throat, influenza, whooping cough,
hoarseness, liver complaint, pains or soreness in the chest
or side, bleeding at the lungs and every affection of the
throat, lungs and chest. We found an interesting 1884 Ohio Supreme Court case at this link about Wistar's Balsam concerning this product and including these names: Isaac Butts, John D. and small litho advertising trade card printed with gold
inks. The illustrated wooden archway surrounding the boy
has Germany carved in it. The boy appears to be a courier
or letter carrier of sorts, with an unusual pipe. This Heineman

and knocking over a farmer, a woman and child hollering
in the background and a dog barking. Under the scene
is printed "Raising
the old man". The back has all the products
