| Visit Ancestorville 1901 Allen: 1860's CDV Carte de Visite Photograph of Ward E. Allen, MA This is a wonderful hand signed and hand dated Civil War era CDV carte de visite photo portrait of Ward E. Allen. On back side hehas handwritten in beautiful script "Very Cordially, Your Friend, Ward E. Allen, Templeton, Mass. "Our Home" June 15, 1863." Mr. Allen is in his late 20s here. The photo is unique in that his arm holding onto the chair appears to have moved and it seems that the photographer shaded out the movement in the negative. His hat also shows movement. Quite unusual for this time in the development of photography. In the 1860 census, Ward E. Allen age 24 b. CT was residing in Templeton, Worcester County, MA, appearing to be a boarder with a Parker family. In the 1870 census he's said to be age 36 and was residing in Ashburnham with wife Susan. In 1880, still in Ashburnham, still with wife, for occupation he said he worked in a chain shop. Further information about her from on line - her maiden name was Susan Sophronia Pendelton, b. Willimansett MA, married to Mr. Allen in Willamansett in 1868, and she passed away in Chicopee Falls, MA in 1890 (More info: PENDELTON, Susan Sophronia b: 1 MAY 1833 in Willimansett, Mass. d: 27 FEB 1890 in Chicopee Falls, Mass.) Pendleton is another spelling of this surname. Found in NYC New York in Kings, Queens, Delaware and New York Counties, NY. Names in census records might read: Ward Allen, Susan Ward, Susan S. Street buildings involved in the starting of the 1872 Boston fire.
Historical The Great Boston Fire of 1872 was Boston's largest urban
fire and still one of the most costly fire-related property losses
in American history. The fire began at 7:20 p.m. on November 9, 1872
in the basement of a commercial warehouse at 83 - 87 Summer Street
in Boston, Massachusetts. The fire was finally contained 12 hours
later after it had consumed about 65 acres of Boston's downtown,
776 buildings, much of the financial district and caused $73.5 million
in damage. At least 20 people are known to have died
in the fire. Boston's Fire Chief John Damrell was credited for stopping
the fire despite the circumstances. Damrell later used his celebrity
to lobby for the adoption of a unified national building code." See

beautiful old 1869 Scottish marriage certificate was found in Western
Massachusetts in Worcester County. The certificate is on Victorian
printed paper, with decorative edge. Handwritten it has "Dougald

both in this Parish have been proclaimed in the Parish Church of
Lecropt in order for marriage, three several times and no objections
made is attested at Lecropt on this, the twenty seventh day of December,
one thousand eight hundred and sixty nine years by Jno Wilson, Session
Clerk."(It
is assumed his name to be Jonathon Wilson, John Wilson, or Johnathon
Wilson) The back has handwritten: "That on this thirty first
day of December 1869 Dougald Mc Ewen and Elizabeth Ferguson were
married by me at Old Mile Bridge of Allan, is attested, and signed
by James ____ (last name illegible, looks like James Muir or James
Muer, may be neither) Minister." A wonderful early piece. We
found Dougald and Elizabeth in census records, we know they they
had one daughter named Isabella W. McEwen (or Isabella McEwen). They
may have had more children. We do not know if they immigrated to
America although the item was found in the U.S. We wish it could
talk! The bottom of the front page has printed the text: "To provide
for the better registration of births, deaths, and marriage in Scotland."
